Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a fantastic award to be involved in and is undoubtedly highly respected by employers and universities alike. Lady Lumley’s School is able to offer students the opportunity to participate in Bronze, Silver and Gold level of the Award. The Award is run by Mr Mann and currently there are training sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. In addition to this direct entry to the Gold Award is available via the Sixth Form’s Enrichment programme.
The Award requires commitment from participants and once completed, is a powerful tool on your CV. Our recent expeditions have taken place in the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds. In the future we intend to use the Yorkshire Dales and beyond for expeditions.
Participants are entitled to a 15% discount at http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com.
Kayaking and Canoeing
The school has a wide selection of Canoeing and Kayaking equipment. We have our own fleet of Old Town Open Canoes and a fleet of Pyranha Kayaks. In addition to this we have safety equipment of the highest quality and safety standards.
All sessions are run in accordance to the stringent standards of the British Canoe Union. The sessions take place on a local venue and we currently offer three types of course. The first is a taster session which gives the students a chance to experience at first hand controlling a canoe or kayak and to learn about safety whilst on the water. All students who complete this course are eligible to receive the Paddlepower Start Award.
We then offer our students the chance to achieve the BCU 1 star award, which requires the student to be able to paddle both a Kayak and Open Canoe successfully.
The next qualification is the BCU 2 star award and is the award that you must take in order to become a Level 1 Coach of Kayaking and Canoeing. This requires a much more fluent paddling ability and the ability to rescue and assist other water users.
In the near future we shall be giving the students the chance to paddle on White Water and to complete their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions by Canoe. Currently sessions take place on Tuesday evenings.
Mountain Biking
Mountain Biking is an extremely popular sport at Lady Lumley’s School. The school has its own fleet of mountain bikes in conjunction with Charge mountain bikes. The bikes offer disc brakes, RockShox suspension, Sram gears and other high quality components.
All sessions are run with a qualified MIAS Mountain Bike instructor and take place at Dalby Forest. Students are given the chance to run a variety of routes in the forest and they are encouraged to progress their riding further. Small instructor to student ratios ensure that students are able to develop their bike handling skills, navigation and bike maintenance.
Wall Climbing
As part of our impressive array of Outdoor Education equipment, Lady Lumley’s School is now offering climbing on its brand new state of the art climbing wall. The wall, situated in the Sports Hall offers a challenge to beginners and experts alike. The highest quality and safest equipment is used to ensure an extremely safe session.
Currently a 7 week climbing course is offered on Wednesdays at 3.35pm. During this course students will learn the following essential aspects of rock climbing:
- Safety on the wall
- Effective warm ups and warm downs
- Essential climbing knots
- How to climb
- Buddying a partner
- Traversing the wall
- Belaying a partner
- Climbing on ropes and rope work
Climbing is an excellent form of exercise, which challenges both the body and mind. Taking in part in such an activity raises not only physical competence but also raises self esteem and empowers the student. Students taking part in the course develop a sense of responsibility and are able to transfer problem solving skills developed to other areas of the curriculum at Lady Lumley’s.
The course is run by a Mountain Leader Training England qualified instructor to ensure the highest standards of safety.
